Turmeric

Turmeric is a member of the ginger family and native to Southeast Asia. It is commonly used in Indian and Southeast Asian cuisine and it is a big part of cultural and healing traditions in those regions as well. For centuries it has been used in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine to help fight infections and treat a number of conditions. There are many studies that show that its powerful medicinal properties could be from the curcumin found in the root. Fresh turmeric typically has a bright orange flesh and a peppery flavor.

Turmeric can be peeled, sliced, and grated and added to smoothies and it can even be juiced. Careful when preparing it though, the orange flesh can stain your fingers and clothing!
